MyGeneration

Set up in May 2006, MyGeneration provides solutions for social challenges affecting young people, their families and the communities in which they live. They are trying to break the damaging cycle of dependency which exists in many communities by inspiring people to lead more socially responsible lives. By presenting the opportunities and help available, they encourage and empower the young to take control of their own lives.

MyGeneration is a registered charity as well as a company limited by guarantee.  For the past 18 months, they have been working from their offices based in North Kensington, just a stone’s throw away from the borders of Westminster and Brent, from where MyGen get many people seeking their help. Being situated in North Kensington, which is in the top 4% of the most deprived communities in the UK, they have extensive experience in tackling the issues faced by the diverse groups forced to live in overcrowded estates. Their support is a lifeline to those immigrants and indigenous poor who lack employable skills.

MyGeneration’s office is open five days a week. They work with a wide age range, concentrating on youth but also offering practical support to adults. They endeavour to raise the aspirations of the community – financially, socially and educationally – by helping them to overcome an impoverished start in life through informal social interaction with a nurturing but disciplined approach. They seek to steer a new generation of disenfranchised young people away from a life of crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour to a life of employment, self-reliance, education and social responsibility. They believe sustainable change must be driven from within and engage their beneficiaries in activities that instil a sense of personal responsibility.

MyGeneration run a wide range of projects including Street Kings and Generation Girls; both of which work with young people aged 11 – 17, aiming to steer them towards positive lifestyles and aspirations. Other projects include Job Club, which helps those aged 16 and older to find sustainable careers through CV guidance and training to improve their employability, and Step Up, a secondary school based mentoring programme aiming to steer boys away from crime and boost their educational attainment.
